Though the track list on Falcon’s self-titled EP is small, the sound is irrefutably mighty. Epic, multifaceted crescendos backed by powerful guitars and crashing cymbals make this Brooklyn band a force to be reckoned with, and it doesn’t hurt that the pipes of lead singer Neil Rosen have the same tortured-though-soothing quality as those of Coldplay’s Chris Martin. Like Martin and his indisputably successful alt-rock British powerhouse, Rosen and the rest of Falcon are artists whose music demonstrates deeper passions that pulse beneath the downbeat.

Of the five selections that made the EP cut, my favorite is the deceiving uplifting melody of “Listen In”, or perhaps the lead-off track, “The Sandfighter”: Falcon’s sound hits the ear as a composition, unlike half of the digitally-engineered, high-profile hits topping the Billboard charts week after week.

There’s substance here in Rosen’s multi-octave range, in the meticulous meld of powerful guitar riffs, and in the thought-provoking lyrics full of poignant one-liners and romantic notions.

In addition to the teasing introduction their EP provides, Falcon’s got one hell of a background story that fuels further interest in this band of old friends. Falcon’s entire catalogue was written by Jared Falcon, the friend and classmate of guitarist Shannon Ferguson, and the unusual origins of Falcon’s material are described in great detail on the bio provided by their MySpace profile.

I highly recommend reading up on the band before giving the EP a spin: not only will you come away from their bio with a greater appreciation of the dedication Falcon has to capitalizing on artistic genius, you’ll also feel the undeniable bond between a band, their music, and this intimate tribute to their muse.
