Digital Primate

With lyrics like “stop this fictitious booty-licious bullshit/before I get booty-vicious”, it’s safe to say that Digital Primate is deathly allergic to said bullshit when it comes to beats.

Siege Mentality sounds like something you’d hear emanating from the back alley entrance of a rock bar or an expat club in London; it sounds like a dingy dance hall in the islands got it on with the record selection of a house DJ’s boot, and the resulting offspring is Digital Primate’s set list. Complete with cuss-ridden lyrics, rock steady reggae influences, and an overall danceable feel that caters to those who love the nightlife, Digital Primate provides pulsing rhythms for an edgy dance floor in any context on their most recent release.

The collaborative nature of Primate’s release leaves the listener satisfied, seeing as the artists involved span several genres: the powerful presence of Queen Khadeeja on rap-heavy tracks like “No Soldier” add bite to the butter-like quality of Valerie M’s vocal prowess featured in “I Deserve”.

My only complaint regarding Siege Mentality is that it’s not an album you can listen to in one sitting. Adding these tracks to a playlist or spinning them in a crowded room is a no brainer; however, taking all twenty tracks in at a time could result in bass overload and Digital Primate’s unapologetic style could come across as repetitive and, at times, obnoxious. Long story short? Kudos to Digital Primate for collaborating with a gaggle of gifted artists and producers; it makes for an album that drives people to the dance floor in droves and keeps them there for hours at a time, even if the style bends towards the repetitive every once in awhile.
