We’ve all got a soft side when it comes to auditory pleasures, let’s be honest. Be it Stevie Nicks or Boyz II Men or Kansas, you know what you’ll be listening to as you’re getting ready for bed or which playlist on your iPod will enable you to mellow out with ease in any setting. Peter Bradley Adams fits right in with this kind of sleepy melancholy: his crooning sensitivity, soft guitar, and piano playing are appropriate and edgy enough for coffee house background music. They also lend their musically medicinal properties to any situation in dyer need of a slow-down.
The eerie, haunting quality of Adams’ blend of bluegrass, jazz and alternative influences results in a smooth sound that ultimately satisfies. Leavetaking is in danger of being misunderstood, however.
“Song for Viola”, to me, is a gorgeous composition, with its elegant strings weeping throughout the song’s two minutes. Could I see how one may listen to this same selection and deem it worthy of a public service announcement for the environment, complete with images of mopey otters trapped in plastic rings that formally held a six pack of Miller Lite? Absolutely. My point is that Peter Bradley Adams is a master of mood music, and if you’re not in the right mood, he’s the least likely to strike your fancy.
