Bella Noir’s “Premonitions EP” is a dark journey into New York City’s electro-indie scene. Heavily layered, walled with sound, and cemented together with Wilneida’s sultry voice, this EP is a swim through a choppy yet beautiful ocean of music.
“Stand Closer,” the albums lead track (yes it is.) rocks! Blending everything, but the kitchen sink, this synth and bass-infused masterpiece is as dark as it is beautiful. I found myself hitting the back button a few times.
“On the Floor” is a sad, slow song with a driving melody, brooding vocals, and cryptic lyrics. Orchestral in nature, this track is perfect for a rainy day.
“My Son,” is a fluttery delve into a deep swimming pool of sound picture Dick Dale meets The Cure.
“Distraction” closes the album, blending several genres and styles in beautifully concocted chaos.
Can’t wait to hear the full length from this band!
Bella Noir – “Stand Closer”
More on Bella Noir

In early 2005 Wilneida moved to NYC with a four song EP she hoped would convince other musicians to take up her cause. Less than a year previous, her music had been a quite private affair. For many years the Caribbean songstress wrote music and lyrics no one had listened to; by September of 2005 this would no longer be the case.
On a warm grimy day in NYC Wilneida met Gary (guitar, samples) and Laura (bass, backup vox) on the same day; instantly discovering with each the chemistry that forms the basis for their current creative and on-stage success. Hailing from Manchester’s music scene, Gary is the computer scientist of the coterie; defining Bella Noir’s dreamy soundscape through computer-generated hooks, samples, and chiming chords that embellish and adorn Wilneida’s solid melodies. Laura, who came of age playing in NYC bands, has a talent for challenging traditional time signatures.
While she confesses to coveting the drum, her sensually and rhythmically embodied live performance leaves no doubt that the bass is a natural extension of her body. It was through Laura that Bella Noir found drummer Ruben, who brought to Bella Noir the kind of percussive framework needed to achieve the band’s unquestionable dynamism. His intense, skillful, and acrobatic performance on drums is another must-see element of Bella Noir’s live act.
Finding their stride was a revelation that onlookers at recent shows have remarked upon. Combining experimental arrangements with an electonica aftertouch, pushing visual boundaries and delivering their mixed personal experiences is both abrasive and understated. The diversity of NYC is their obvious spiritual home.
